Persona 3 combines elements of traditional role-playing games and simulation games. Each day is divided up between various time zones, the most common of which are “After School/Daytime” and “Evening”. With the exception of scripted events, such as plot progression or special events, the player is free to choose how each day is spent, with most activities causing time to pass on. The game follows the protagonist character, balancing their daily life of going to school and building relationships with other people with fighting evil beings known as Shadows during the mysterious Dark Hour.

A PlayStation Portable version of Persona 3, titled Persona Portable 3 was released in Japan in November 2009, in North America in July 2010, and in Europe in April 2011. The PSP version adds the ability to play as a female protagonist, new story elements and music, and a new interface designed for the PSP.

The battle system is turn-based. Prior to battle, the player can manage character equipment and abilities, and then select which characters to bring into battle. On each turn, for each character, the player can move and then perform an action such as attacking, using items or skills; each action awards a number of experience points to the character. Unique to the game is the creation of a “Burning Aura” which forms on the space immediately behind the target of the attack; a second character can move into that space and strike for extra damage, or if a character is already in that space, the Aura will move with that character and increase the power of the attack on that turn only Burning Auras disappear after one turn.

5. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

The order of movement is determined by the speed of individual characters, in contrast to games in which each side moves its entire team at once. Each character is moved individually on the grid and the order of combat is calculated for each character individually. The game-play is intermixed with expositional cut-scenes revealing the plot, shown in the same isometric view as the battles. Movement and team management between battles are done through a map interface. Most human characters begin as either amazons or soldiers. By leveling up correctly, they can later progress to the other male or female classes, although most advanced classes are limited to certain alignments lawful, neutral, or chaotic.

6. Riviera: The Promised Land.

This was obviously created for people who want to skip all that exploration dive right into the meat of the story and the epic battles. There’s no wandering around aimlessly to track down the hidden treasure chests or to trigger the inevitable random fights. Everything in Riviera is laid out in a specific, rigid manner, making it so that players spend more time unfolding the usual “good versus evil” plot like a novel, instead of creating gaps in the storytelling due to the familiar aimless wandering to find the next point players need to go. How this is done is by a simple controller interface that assigns a map direction or items to a direction on the D-pad. This interface brings back the feeling of a point-and-click adventure, without the need of randomly clicking every little location on the screen to bring up the trigger-point.

Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land become mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.
